Project description
On the banks of the Scheldt, a cubic concrete warehouse is converted into a live-work space for an artist. Situated between the Droogdokkenpark, historic dry docks, and the Zomercafé, the site becomes part of a new public green area with direct connections to the Eilandje and the MAS.
The project accommodates a sculptor who combines living and working in one space. The existing building is preserved wherever possible, maintaining its scale, materiality, and industrial character. Within this framework, new domestic and studio functions are introduced, supporting both everyday life and the creation of large-scale sculptures.
The intervention follows an installation-based approach, as described by Brooker & Stone: the existing building remains the primary reference, while new elements are carefully inserted rather than imposed. This method allows the original form and spatial qualities to remain legible, while enabling contemporary use. The result is a layered condition in which old and new coexist.
Inside, the relationship between structure and function is made explicit. Structural elements and circulation are highlighted in blue, while living spaces are defined in yellow. This distinction clarifies spatial organization and emphasizes the contrast between existing and added elements, keeping the warehouse’s industrial presence visible.
The project achieves a balance between preservation and transformation, retaining the building’s identity while enabling a new mode of inhabitation that integrates art, life, and public engagement.
