Project description
The Armenschool, also known as the Boerlaschooltje, is a neoclassical school building designed by city architect Pierre Bruno Bourla and completed in 1828. Originally part of Antwerp’s Bureel van Weldadigheid, it served as one of the city’s first purpose-built schools and is today the oldest preserved urban school in Antwerp. The brick building features a classical façade with Doric columns and a symmetrical layout. Originally housing a single large classroom for 325 students, it now accommodates the Sculpture program.
The interior design draws directly from the neoclassical façade. Rhythm, symmetry, and verticality inform the layout: wall panels are articulated with vertical wooden slats echoing the façade’s window divisions, while proportions reinforce the sense of classical balance. This creates a contemporary interpretation of Bourla’s neoclassical language, integrating historic reference with modern spatial use.
Material choices and lighting enhance intimacy and spatial hierarchy. Darker finishes at specific heights foster a cocoon-like atmosphere, while vertical wall lighting emphasizes height and rhythm. Light-colored furniture provides contrast and depth. The result is a refined, contemporary interior that is at once intimate, elegant, and respectful of its neoclassical heritage.
